One of the more out of the way locals for a baseball game, Chico, nevertheless is perhaps the city most dedicated to independent baseball. The Chico Heat proved to be the most successful of the defunct Western Baseball League, and the Outlaws are proving to be the same for the Golden Baseball League. Of course the reputation of Chico as a great city for minor league baseball was no secret, and the GBL was counting heavily on Chico’s success when launching the league in 2005.

Mavericks Stadium is off the beaten path, perhaps more than any other of California’s stadiums. Sure you could argue that Interstate 15 is not that far away. You could also argue that Chico is the most isolated of California’s pro teams (think Seattle to the majors). Yet Adelanto really is a destination that you would have no reason to go to, unless to see a Mavericks game.

Since Oakland moved its affiliate from Vancouver to Sacramento in 2000, the River Cats have become one of the most successful organizations in all of minor league baseball, in terms of both wins and attendance. The fans love this team, almost as much as they love their Kings of the National Basketball Association.
