Visalia Introduces New Name

The team now called the Visalia Rawhide

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Visalia’s professional baseball club announced their new name, the Visalia Rawhide, along with new colors, logo, uniforms, and even mascot.  The team’s new moniker continues a trend of paying tribute to the local dairy community.  In choosing the new name, the Oaks,…excuse me,…the Rawhide said they spent two years soliciting input from fans, players, and others in the industry for ideas.  The team indicated they ultimately picked the name for the following reasons:

·         -Originality (according to the team, they are the first professional sports team to use the nickname)

·         -Representative of the City of Visalia and the surrounding area

·         -Something players will be proud to wear

·         -Fun

While the logo, colors (strikingly similar to the parent club Arizona Diamondback colors), and the uniforms are sure to be a hit, player reaction might not be as strong.  When CaProParks.com first reported the pending name change in September, we had heard from a couple of players that they weren’t crazy about the name change.  That was before the complete package was announced, however, and with the initial look, the team may be on to something.  The new home cap will include a “V” styled to look like a cow brand, with away caps showing an “R” encircled by a whip.  The Rawhide  logo will be on both home and away uniforms, with batting practice uniforms sporting the branding “V”.

Visalia has already drawn attention for it Dairy Day and Cowbell Section promotions.  Included in current stadium renovations is the creation of a large red barn beyond the right field (to be used as a groundkeeper shed).  The new mascot, Tripper, will of course be a cow (or more specifically a bull) dressed in the Rawhide uniform.  The team also has a new website www.rawhidebaseball.com.
