Carlos Santana Named CAL League MVP

Despite playing only 99 games with the Inland Empire 66ers, Carlos Santana was awarded MVP honors for the California League Monday night.  Santana, a catcher, hit .323 with 14 home runs, 96 RBIs, and 98 runs scored before being traded to the Cleveland Indians organization in late July.  Santana continued his hot streak in the Carolina League hitting .333 with 14 RBIs in 24 for games to date for the Kinston Indians.

Kevin Pucetas, meanwhile, was named Pitcher of the Year going 10-2 with a 3.07 ERA through Monday.  Pucetas has 99 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 120 1/3 innings for the San Jose Giants.  Pucetas joins two other players from the Giants, Matt Downs and fellow starter Tim Alderson announced to the 2008 California League Postseason All-Star team.

Three Lake Elsinore Storm players also make the all star roster, second baseman Eric Sogard and outfielders Cedric Hunter and Kellen Kulbacki.  Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga had two players each, joining one player each from Modesto, Visalia, and Stockton.

Stockton’s Christopher Carter was name Rookie of the Year.  Manager of the Year honors went to Lancaster’s Chad Epperson.
