Standoff Postpones Nuts-Oaks GameFriday, July 25, 2008 A standoff between police and Tulare County sheriff's deputies near Recreation Park postponed Thursday nights game between the Visalia Oaks and the visiting Modesto Nuts. The standoff occurred when a resident less than a block form the stadium stabbed Tulary County Sheriff Sgt. John Gray while serving an eviction notice to the suspect. Gray then shot the suspect who retreated into the home, causing the ensuing standoff. The suspect, Melvin Nicks, eventually reemerged from the house and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Not wanting to make a visit to Recreation Park dangerous, the Oaks official called the postpone a result of "extenuating circumstances." July 27th has been suggested as a make up date, and the Oaks front office is considering promoting the date as "Thirsty Sunday" to make up the loss of one of their "Thirsty Thursday" games.
