Another Chico Pitcher Goes to Big League Organization
Derrick Loop's contract purchased by Boston
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
You have to feel both good about, and sorry for the Chico Outlaws. They had barely started the season when two of their starting pitchers had their contracts purchased by big league organizations. The GBL is a development league, and Chico benefits from selling contracts to big league clubs, but the losses can in part help explain Chico’s slow start. Last night, Chico lost the services of their ace when Derrick Loop, the GBL leader in E.R.A. had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox. Loop, 23, was on the mound when the transaction was completed. He had held Calgary scoreless in five innings, lowering his season E.R.A. to an amazing 0.81, when an announcement was made to the large crowd at Nettleton Stadium. The news, of course, brought a standing ovation from the crowd, who were more happy for Loop than disappointed that he would no longer be pitching for Chico. Apparently Boston had a scout at the game to do one final check of the young pitcher before completing the deal. The New York Yankees are also reported to have had an interest in Loop.
In the short term, Loop will probably stay in California with a likely move to Lancaster in the California League.
