Update on the Surf Dawgs

Team likely to return to GBL.

Friday, May 2, 2008

For those who follow the Golden Baseball League, you may have wondered what happened to the Surf Dawgs, or at least why the San Diego team still has a link from the GBL’s website.  Plans are in the work to bring the team, which has not played since 2006, back to the league as early as the 2009 season.  According to league commissioner Kevin Outcalt, a preliminary agreement has been reached for the team to play at University of San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium.  The deal is pending improvements to Cunningham Stadium, originally slated to take place prior to the 2009 season, but now more likely to take happen during the summer of 2009.   That time frame would put the Surf Dawgs back on the field for the 2010 season.

The San Diego Surf Dawgs, with Ricky Henderson on the team, won the 2004 GBL championship in the leagues inaugural season.  The attention brought by Ricky Henderson made this team one of the more followed in the league.  The team also boasted one of the more popular team logos, a dog carrying a bat over its left shoulder and a surfboard under its right arm, which seemed to strike a cord with its Southern California audience.  The team stopped playing after the 2006 season because of an apparent dispute with San Diego State University over the use of Tony Gwynn Stadium.
