Civic Stadium looking for new life

Thursday, March 25, 2010

A reader recently sent me a newspaper clipping from the Oregon Daily Emerald discussing the future of Civic Stadium.  The park, built in 1938, has been home of the Eugene Emeralds since 1969.  The Emeralds, however, have moved to PK Park, a new stadium build for the University of Oregon's baseball team.  With a 20-year lease in place at PK Park, Civic Stadium is now home stadium without a team to call it home.

The Emeralds move to PK Park was for good reason.  Civic Stadium is showing its age.  Owned by the Eugene School District, little money was available to give the stadium the kind of face lift it needs.  Of course, the Eugene School District is in no position to keep a large piece of land vacant without revenue.  That led many to speculate the stadium would be razed and the land sold off to developers.

As it turns out, however, a group of citizens who formed Save Civic Stadium is working to secure a lease from the school district so it can renovate Civic.  The intent is to make Civic available for other events, besides just baseball.  It is just one of the options before the school district, but the district recognizes the historical and architectural value of Civic Stadium.

What eventually happens with Civic Stadium is far from certain.  It appears this grand old ballpark has at least a little more history left in her.
