![]() Brett group has yet to sell High Desert MavericksThursday, February 11, 2010 Brett Sports and Entertainment, a group led by Bobby Brett and his brothers including Hall of Fame player George Brett, was unable to sell the High Desert Mavericks within a six month grace period according to a report in the High Desert Daily Press. Brett Sports bought the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in August, 2009. Because both teams play in the the California League, the company is required to sell the High Desert Mavericks. Minor League Baseball prohibits two teams within the same league from having the same owners. Brett Sports and Entertainment was given a six month waiver to sell the team. According to the Daily Press, the company has talked to several interested parties about the sale, but nothing is imminent. What penalties Brett Sports and Entertainment could face as a result of not selling the team is unclear, but may include financial penalties. The Mavericks, who reached the championship series in the California League in 2009 before being swept by the San Jose Giants, have been the subject of move rumors for the last couple seasons. One scenario had the team moving to the Carolina League along with the Bakersfield Blaze. Those rumors had the Mavericks moving to Richmond, Virginia, which has since seen the former Connecticut, Defenders (Double-A) move into town. More recently, the Mavericks wanted to move to nearby Apple Valley, California until a deal to build a new stadium was voted down by city leaders. The team has been unhappy with upkeep at Mavericks Stadium by the City of Adelanto. Reader FeedbackThere are no comments yet for this article. Be the first to post!
