Giants top prospect Posey likely to stay at Triple-A, for nowWednesday, January 20, 2010 In a surprise move, the San Francisco Giants signed Bengie Molina to a one-year deal yesterday. Molina was widely believed to be going elsewhere, with the New York Mets the likely team. While the announcement may be welcomed news for many Giants fans, it does have ramifications for catcher Buster Posey, the Giants top prospect and one of the most watched players in the Minor Leagues. Posey will likely be starting the year at Triple A Fresno instead of with San Francisco as many had predicted. Posey has been on the fast track to the big leagues. Drafted in the 2008 amateur draft as the fifth overall pick, Posey appeared in seven games with the 2009 Giants after rosters expanded in September. He started behind the plate in four of those games and hit just .188 in 17 plate appearances. Prior to that, he batted .321 in 35 games with the Fresno Grizzlies, and .326 in 80 games with Single A Advanced San Jose Giants. He had a .540 slugging percentage with San Jose, and had only two errors behind the plate. That Posey would be called up in just his second year as a pro came as little surprise. The Giants do not appear to be ready to rush Posey’s full-time move to Major League Baseball. He spent much longer in the Single-A leagues than what his numbers would support, but he likely skipped the Double-AA promotion to keep him on the West Coast and close to the Giants. The Giants would rather have him working every day than playing back-up to Molina, so Posey could be in Fresno for much of the season. Posey could see some big league action along the way, if for no other reason than to get some mentoring from a veteran like Molina. It shouldn’t be long, however, before Posey is a day-to-day player in the Major Leagues, and if he isn’t already promoted or traded by then, expect Posey to be another Giants September call-up.
