Palm Springs Could Host 2010 GBL Team

League reaches an agreement for 2010 or 2011.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

The Golden Baseball League has reached an agreement with Palm Springs Professional Baseball, LLC for rights to operate a team from that league in Palm Springs.  Play there is expected to start in 2010 or 2011.

A specific stadium was not named by the league, but the most likely venue would be Palm Springs Stadium, which has hosted the GBL's winter league team the Palm Springs Chill.  Palm Springs Stadium, however, is also home to the Palm Spring Power, one of the more successful of the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association teams.  The groups is the same ownership group that owns the Orange County Flyers, while Andrew Starke, president and general manager (and owner) of the Palm Springs Power does not seem to be part of the equation.  Also included in the deal are the rights to the entire Coachella Valley, so the possibility remains that a team could be located elsewhere in the Palm Springs area.

The GBL has been careful not to indicated that a team will definitely be located in Palm Springs, rather just the rights have been granted with the possiblity of a 2010 or 2011 start.  Having a team in Palm Springs, however, along with the planned team in Maui would bring the number of GBL teams back up to 10 after last year's set back in Tijauna and the recent folding of the St. George Roadrunners.
