San Jose Giants Win Cal League ChampionshipSweep High Desert with a 4-3 come from behind win on Saturday.Sunday, September 20, 2009 The San Jose Giants swept the High Desert Mavericks to win the best of five California League Championship. Starting pitcher Eric Surkamp overcame a rocky start to strike out 12 in 8 and 1/3 innings to get the victory. High Desert had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the third, but San Jose scored one run in each of the next four innings. The loss completed an amazing run for High Desert, who dominated the south and had the best record through the first half of the season. The win for the Giants completed their amazing season, coming from behind to take the first half then dominating the second. Both High Desert and San Jose were taken to the brink by second round competitors Rancho Cucamonga (South) and Bakersfield (North), winning their respective series in the fifth and decisive games. With both the Mavericks and the Giants winning both half of the seasons, it seemed nothing short of these two teams meeting in a championship showdown would make the season complete. All three games were exciting with one run victories in game one and three and a near comeback by High Desert in a 7-5 loss in game two. Reader FeedbackThere are no comments yet for this article.
