Exciting Finish to Triple-A All-Star Game

Thursday, July 16, 2009

In light of the Major League All-Star game played on Tuesday night in Saint Louis, many may have missed an exciting Triple-A All Star game the day after pitting the best from the International League and the best from the Pacific Coast League.  In the 22nd rendition of the game, a bottom of the 9th rally by the PCL fell short, as the International all-stars took the victory 6-5.  Down 6-3 with two outs and Portland’s Chad Huffman on third, Esteban German from the Oklahoma City RedHawks came through with a two run blast.  That was all, however, as Pawtucket’s Fernando Cabrera bounced back to strike out Orlando Young of Colorado Springs, one of 14 strikeouts by IL pitchers and the third strikeout by Young.

The game was played at PGE Park in Portland.  The history and urban setting, along with an impressive wooden roof, makes PGE one of my favorites.  The stadium graces the cover of my most recent book, Professional Ballparks of the West Coast.
