James McOwen on Streak to Remember

High Desert Slugger Has Longest Hitting Streak in 55 Years

Thursday, July 9, 2009

James McOwen's amazing hitting streak almost ended at 43 games.  Facing the San Jose Giants on Tuesday on night down 12-2, McOwen got a broken bat single to barely extend his hitting streak to 44 games.  With the hit, McOwens has the longest minor league hitting streak in 55 years, and the eighth longest in Minor League history.  With two hits on Wednesday, the streak now sits at 45.  The 23 year old McOwen has had some other close calls, seven hits during the streak have come at the last at bat.  Yet sitting at a .355 batting average, the Mavericks outfielder leads a pack of High Desert players riding offensive hot streaks including Tyson Gillies (.232 average) and Carlos Peguero (18 home runs).

The minor league record for a hit streak is 69 games, achieved by Joe Wilhoit for Witchita in 1919.
