California League Tops Carolina League in 10

Walk-off home run secures victory for California All-Stars

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

In a game that was billed as pitting Carolina League pitching versus California League hitting, it was California’s pitching, and a sudden blast from Lancaster’s lone representative that won it for the league from the Golden State.  After taking an early 1-0 lead on Buster Posey’s RBI single in the bottom of the first, California pitching kept Carolina at bay until the top of the eight, when Frederick Keys hit a lead-off triple, then scored on a fielding error by second baseman Matthew Lawson (Bakersfield).

Despite the pitching duel, the night belonged to Jon Gaston, who had strike-out his first three at bats.  Gaston took the first pitch of the inning from Derrick Loop (Salem) deep to win it for California.  Gaston was awarded MVP honors for the feat.
