San Jose, High Desert Take First Half Titles


Late surge by San Jose propels Giants in front of Visalia

The San Jose Giants clinched the California League North first half title with a 6-5 victory over the Stockton Ports, and a 4-1 loss by the Visalia Rawhide to Bakersfield.  San Jose, which has spent most of the first half in second or third place, has won 8 of their last 11 include a series sweep over Modesto and a 2-1 series win over Visalia to take over sole at the top of their division for the first time on Friday.  Meanwhile, Visalia has lost five in a row, slipping to two games behind with only one game left in the first half.  It was the fifth consecutive first half title for San Jose.

Meanwhile, High Desert, the surprise team 2009 season, secured the first half title of the California League South Division with a 4-3 victory over Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, June 17.  The last time the Mavericks took the first half title was 16 years ago.  With a 43 wins and 26 losses, the Mavericks have the best record in the California League.

The first half titles guarantee both teams a place in the post season playoffs with first round byes.
