Early Season LullA Few Surprises, but Not Much Else to Talk About in California Minor LeaguesMonday, May 4, 2009
At the risk of sounding board, which I am not (this is baseball season after all and my latest book has just came out), I am amazed at how little news there is to talk about in the California minor leagues. Yes, there’s been a couple records broken, a new affiliation in Lancaster to track, and Baseball America recently got in on the great baseball stadiums debate, but the few surprises to start the season have really been about team performance. It’s just too early to start getting too excited about early season success or jumping on any bandwagons (which I never do anyway, right?). Here are my early season observations: Surprises – Visalia and Stockton. Visalia is off to a great start. They are 18-6 through the weekend and had the largest attendance to a game since 1960 with 2,600 fans attending it’s home opener as it ushered in a greatly revamped Recreation Park. Stockton is headed in the opposite direction. The defending California League champs are 6-18 through the weekend. Other surprises – High Desert and the CAL South. High Desert has the second best record in the in the California League. There are two teams above .500 in the South (Lake Elsinore is other), and neither one of them is Lancaster.
Not so surprising – Sacramento and Fresno. Sacramento leads the PCL Pacific Division South, Fresno is second to last. Where have we heard this before? Waiting for something to happen – Not one rumor yet about Bakersfield or any other team’s move to the Carolina League. I guess that won’t come until after the All-Star break.
