Surprise StartsWow, what a start for Visalia! Ugh, what a start for StocktonFriday, April 17, 2009
While it might be foolhardy to jump to any championship conclusions in April (we’ll leave that to the New York press), you can’t help but notice the 8-0 start of Visalia and the 0-8 start of Stockton. Even more curious, none of the wins and losses came against the other team. What’s even more telling is that both teams started the season with seven games on the road. The Rawhide swept a four game series with Lake Elsinore at The Diamond, then took three from Rancho Cucamonga before beating a hot Modesto team 2-1 in their home opener Thursday night. The defending champs, on the other hand, were probably excited to get home after losing four in San Jose and three in Modesto. Alas, San Jose continue their payback from the 2008 playoff ousting by taking a fifth straight 3-1 in the Port's home opener. Again, way too early to call anything, but considering that Stockton finished up the 2008 season as California League champions while Visalia limped to a 67-72 record for the season, these two teams have started the 2009 season in very different directions.
