Remembering Nick AdenhartThursday, April 9, 2009
Los Angeles rookie, rhp Nick Adenhart, was killed in a car accident in Fullerton, California early Thursday morning, just hours after pitching six scoreless innings in the Angel 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics. He was 22. Wednesday’s game was just Adenhart’s fourth start in what appeared to be a promising Major League career. Adenhart had a brief stint with the Angels in 2008, but this looked to be the year he would make a permanent place on the Angel’s roster. Drafted in the 14th round of the June 2004 draft, Adenhart took nearly a straight path up the ladder in the Angel’s farm system. He played for five of the organizaton’s seven farm teams starting in the rookie leagues. He played most of last season at Triple A Salt Lake as well as made three starts for the Angels. Much of the 2006 season was spent in Rancho Cucamonga where he went 5-2 with a 3.78 ERA in nine games. Adenhart, was a passenger in a silver Mitsubishi along with three others. Fullerton Police reported the Mitsubishi proceeded through an intersection, when a van ran a red light and broadsided the vehicle. A female driver and male passenger in the Mitsubishi were dead when police and fire department personnel arrived. Adenhart died as the result of his injuries at UCI Medical Center earlier this morning. No other members of the Angels organization were involved. Adenhart earned his spot in the Angels rotation via a spring training in which he recorded a 3-0 record and a 3.12 ERA (26 IP - 9 ER) over the course of six starts. During that span, he struck out 18 while allowing only five base on balls. Tonight's game with against the A's has been postponed. Adenhart is survived by his father Jim and mother Janet.
