I've always heard of Oakland as a heavy gang area. How safe is the area around the stadium? Do you have to park and walk to the game through rough areas?
The reputed areas of Oakland that have a history of crime are West Oakland, and to a lesser extent, East Oakland. The area around the stadium does not have that reputation, although it is an industrial area. Some reports of crime have been publicized in the parking lot before/after Raiders games, but not for the Athletics. Like any bigger city, urban industrial area, use best judgment, but you really shouldn't feel any concern for your safety at McAfee. You neither need to drive through, or walk through areas were you would feel unsafe. If you are still concerned, however, I would consider taking BART. The train drops you onto a station with a dedicated platform that leads straight to the stadium, and there are always plenty of people around.
